1865-1951. US Republican politician. In 1923
he was appointed by the Allied Reparations
Commission president of the committee that
produced the Dawes Plan, a $200 million loan
that enabled Germany to pay enormous war
debts after World War I. It reduced tensions
temporarily in Europe but was superseded by
the Young Plan (which reduced the total
reparations bill) 1929. Dawes was elected US
vice president (under Calvin Coolidge) 1924,
received the Nobel Peace Prize 1925, and was
ambassador to Britain 1929-32.
